Squiggles N' Shapes is a Lalaloopsy character whose only appearance is in the Nick Jr. Series episode Spot's New Masterpiece. She is a white clay sculpture created by Spot Splatter Splash that magically came to life upon completion.

Personality[]

Being so new to the world, Squiggles is a blank slate. She starts off with no actual preferences, instead choosing to go along with what the other person likes if it means making them happy. Squiggles is so insecure about being disliked that she pretends to share other people's interests in hopes that they will like her. Whenever Squiggles discovers that she actually dislikes one of her friends' hobbies, she does not speak up, afraid that she will end up hurting their feelings.

Squiggles is inexperienced with social situations, not knowing the right things to say or how to act. Sometimes, she is so shy that she becomes as motionless as the sculpture she began as. This is in sharp contrast to her pet, who is a literal social butterfly. Squiggles genuinely wants to make friends, but it is very difficult and perplexing for her. She believes the only way to be accepted is to imitate others. Thus, whenever she tries to be like someone, she paints her hair and clothes exactly like that person, using a paint palette that Spot gave her.

Since she has only recently come to life, Squiggles is very naive and tends to take things literally. For example, when Spot pointed out how easy it is to make friends once Butterfly befriended Zebra, Squiggles believed Spot was talking about sculpting new friends out of clay. Spot then told her that making friends is becoming friends, not creating them. Squiggles especially misinterprets idioms and other forms of figurative language. She also does not understand when a common phrase does not apply to a situation, as shown when she remembers one of Berry's sayings and tells Bea that her messy house is the sign of a good cook.

After a sincere conversation with Forest, Squiggles realizes that if she really wants to make friends, she should be just herself and be honest about what she truly enjoys. With the support and acceptance of Spot, Mittens, Berry, and Bea, Squiggles discovers her own passions and begins to form a sense of identity.

Nick Jr. Series (Season 2)[]

Spot's New Masterpiece[]

Squiggles starts out as an inanimate clay figure made by Spot for her upcoming art show. When Spot turns around to grab more clay, the sculpture springs to life and taps her on the shoulder twice. It is not long before Spot notices her moving, and Spot is briefly terrified. Spot introduces herself to the clay girl, who admits that she does not have a name. Spot decides to name her "Squiggles." Squiggles accepts this name once she makes sure Spot likes it.

Excited at having a new friend, Spot invites Berry, Bea, and Mittens to enter her house and meet Squiggles. However, Squiggles, not knowing how to act around new people, remains silent and still. The trio believes Spot is playing a prank on them and go off on their way, leaving Spot to question if Squiggles really is alive. Squiggles reassures Spot that she is in fact real, and she apologizes for accidentally embarrassing Spot.

When Squiggles tells Spot that she wishes she could be more like her, Spot gives her a paint set, which Squiggles uses to paint herself to look like Spot. Squiggles also wants a pet, and after spotting a butterfly flying by the window, sculpts her own butterfly out of clay. Berry, Mittens, and Bea walk by Spot's house, so Spot goes outside and tells them to once again meet Squiggles. Opening the door, Squiggles finally reveals herself to the three.

Berry, Mittens, and Bea are dumbfounded by Squiggles' sentience, but quickly become eager to know more about her. They all ask Squiggles about her hobbies. Lacking any real preferences at this point, Squiggles pretends to share their interests in hopes of being accepted. While Spot goes to work on building Squiggles' clay house, the three friends each offer Squiggles to visit them. Squiggles is stumped on whether she should go sledding with Mittens, make blueberry pancakes with Berry, or read books with Bea. She does not want to hurt her friends’ feelings after all. Spot advises Squiggles to spend time with each friend at a time, and she obliges.

Squiggles visits Mittens first, and before she enters her house, she repaints herself back to white. Mittens shows Squiggles her very own sled. Squiggles reluctantly joins her in spite of the tall hill Mittens plans to sled on. Upon sliding down the hill, Squiggles quickly realizes that she actually hates sledding, finding it far too scary, fast, and cold for her. She falls off the sled and lands in the snow. Mittens finds her and asks if she is okay, but Squiggles misinterprets her and answers that she is not okay; she is Squiggles! Mittens then becomes more specific, asking Squiggles if she is hurt. Squiggles is unharmed but extremely cold – so cold in fact that she starts shivering. Mittens brings her inside to knit her a warm scarf. Before making the scarves, Mittens asks Squiggles what her favorite color is. Squiggles does not have an actual favorite color, so she asks Mittens what her favorite color is. Mittens loves light blue, and if she likes it, then Squiggles likes it too.

Once Mittens gives Squiggles her light blue scarf, she starts having second thoughts on choosing it as her supposed favorite color. Mittens then knits Squiggles a pair of light blue mittens to match. When Mittens notes how they could be twins with how much their scarves and mittens match, Squiggles paints herself to look just like Mittens. Just as Mittens suggests sledding down an even bigger and scarier hill, Berry calls her to announce that it is now her turn to be with Squiggles. Leaving her scarf and mittens, Squiggles goes to Berry's house.

Squiggles paints herself to look like Berry and knocks on her door. Berry invites her in for breakfast, having whipped up a fresh batch of blueberry pancakes. After taking one bite of the pancake, Squiggles finds out she dislikes the taste and feeds it to Butterfly while Berry is not looking. When Berry goes on to cook even more pancakes, Squiggles becomes curious about a bag of flour and accidentally drops the contents on herself. Berry reassures Squiggles that it is a sign of a good cook when there is a bit of a mess. Bea calls Berry to ask Squiggles to visit her now.

Secretly delighted that she does not have to stomach more blueberry pancakes, Squiggles leaves for Bea's library. She paints herself white again and enters the messy house. Bea gives Squiggles a stack of books to reshelf while she organizes the top shelf. After Squiggles puts the books in a random shelf, a book filled with colorful illustrations falls into her hands. Squiggles is enamored by the pretty pictures, but she hides the book from Bea.

Bea is sure that Squiggles loves libraries and books as much as she does. Squiggles goes along with it and paints herself to look like Bea. An eager Bea then gets out the Big Book of Books and reads it to Squiggles. Squiggles is so bored by the book’s contents that she nods off. Once Bea finishes, Squiggles suddenly wakes up and claims to have loved it. Just as Bea is about to read the entire book again, Spot arrives to announce that she has finished sculpting Squiggles' house.

Spot brings Squiggles to her new home – a clay house covered top to bottom with nauseatingly colorful spots. Mittens, Berry, and Bea come in with their housewarming gifts, which consist of light blue blankets and pillows, blueberry pancakes and a new frying pan, and books about books. Once Squiggles is left alone to enjoy her presents, she admits to Butterfly that while she appreciates her friends' kindness, she does not like the gifts at all. She only faked sharing her friends' interests and hobbies in hopes that they would like her.

Squiggles goes on a walk to clear her mind of her problems. She eventually arrives and sits down next to a tall tree. There, she meets Forest, who tells her that he had been trying to tap the tree the whole day, to no avail. Squiggles talks about how confusing making friends is to her. She had believed that liking the same things Spot, Mittens, Berry, and Bea liked would instantly make them her friends, but all she really got in return was unwanted gifts. Forest encourages Squiggles to be true to herself. Squiggles takes Forest's advice to heart and points out that the untappable tree is being itself too; it is a shade tree meant to stay tall and strong. Since Squiggles doesn’t remember the way back to her house, Forest takes her back home.

Squiggles invites Spot, Mittens, Berry, and Bea to her house for a confession. She is nervous at first, but upon spotting Forest through the window, she gains the courage to tell her friends the truth. Squiggles actually dislikes blueberries, the color light blue, books about books, and Spot's choice of colors for her new clay house, but had pretended to like them in fear that they would not accept her otherwise. The girls embrace Squiggles for who she is and help her figure out her own interests. With her friends’ support, Squiggles comes to realize that she loves plain waffles with strawberries, the colors orange and green mixed together, and illustrated books. Spot removes the gaudy spots off of Squiggles' house, which she appreciates very much. Squiggles has learned a valuable lesson: you don't have to be like someone to be liked by someone.

Spot Draws the Line[]

A small figurine of Squiggles appears on a shelf on top of Spot's chalkboard. It falls to the floor, along with other objects, when the shelf breaks after the chalk door drawn by Spot closes.
